I am having so much fun researching this novel!
Today I watched a Nova program about solving the problem of determining longitude at sea. There was a contest between the college-educated elite, who favored astronomical means of fixing position, and a self-educated clockmaker, who won the contest by inventing a hyperaccurate timepiece, which enabled the navigator to know the time difference between his current position and Greenwich.
Yesterday I watched a hokey travel video about the Caribbean, which included some scenes of Haiti and Cap Haitien, and Paris and the Loire valley.
It feels wicked to watch videos "for work" but I'm digging it!
