Do You Have What It Takes to Win?
Are you a web designer or developer with Mad Skills? Can you code a website to beat teams from Rackspace, USAA, or Firecat Studio? I dare you to try!
Every year, Firecat Studio sponsors and participates in the Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR) San Antonio. Teams of web designers, developers, copywriters and marketers get paired with worthy local nonprofits and build the nonprofit a website (or enhance their existing website in a single day. Sort of like a barnraising; people gather to build something, and have a great time doing it.
About Web Accessibility
Were you aware that websites can be accessible to people with disabilities - or not? And if your business is creating websites, it's definitely in your interest to learn exactly how that's done. Not only is it the right thing to do, but there's a HUGE market share of people who need accessible websites. Not to mention, the GoogleBot and the Bing site indexer are both "blind and deaf." Here's a brief overview of the AIR San Antonio rally.
Interested in finding out more? Well, do you like beer? (Actually, we've discovered that statistically, web people are statistically likely to consume large quantities of beer, or caffeine, or both.) Knowbility, the nonprofit that puts on the AIR-San Antonio rally, is sponsoring a Happy Hour Mixer for the webizens of San Antonio -- and nonprofits -- to learn more about this fantastic opportunity. Here's a photo from last year's Happy Hour.
That guy in the suit is USAA's Robert Leavitt, last year's honorary event chairman, explaining how the Rally works, giving props to the developers and designers (and their companies) who won last year's Rally. There's something else in it for you: Recognition. The teams are competing for prizes and bragging rights, and everyone who participates gets recognition in the press, online, and in the Central Texas web community. You get another great website for your portfolio. You get to work with different folks, on a different project than your usual. And you may take home a swell trophy and get your name in the paper.
At the 2007 AIR-San Antonio, Rackspace founder Dirk Elmendorf (far right) presented Joe McBride and the nonprofit organization HandsOn with the top prize. What You'll See At The Happy Hour
You'll meet folks who work on some of the top-end websites created in San Antonio. You'll also see examples of the technologies folks with vision, hearing and mobility impairments use to access the Internet.
